2i was trying to encourage more Cald creature decks, but Cald creatures had one inherent weakness - they were easily discarded.  Hence to encourage more people to use Cald creatures, the candlestick was made which gave limited protection to one Cald creature, even against a Cataclysm.  The artwork for this card is by Nick Szankovics who did brilliantly with his play of light and shadow.
